Abra Johnson, Des Moines, Iowa – AVP, Policy Administration

The best thing about living in Des Moines

It’s the biggest small town in the world. People are often referred to as ‘Iowa Nice’, and everyone knows someone you know. Des Moines, Iowa is known for having affordable housing, successful economy (being the second major insurance hub with over 80 firms), stress-free commuting and accomplished schools. We’re pretty decent with the great outdoors, have an abundance of parks, lakes and rivers, and have a great assortment of entertainment options, festivals and food you won’t find anywhere else. Iowa also has an annual bicycle tour (RAGBRAI ride across the state; an 11 day event and we are currently in the midst of our 52nd year). So fun to host the cyclists when they come through, so even if you’re not a cyclist, if you’re an Iowan, it’s probably something you will or have enjoyed in some way.

The perfect summer day looks like…

No alarm; no schedule. Making some iced coffee, hanging out on the deck to ease into my day. I’d take the kids to the beach, do some Zentangle while they play in the water, or stay busy at the local thrift shops to treasure hunt. Either way, I’d finish it off by grilling some delicious dinner with a cold one on the deck, or head out for a bite on a lovely patio at a local microbrew.

Since joining the team, how has your perspective on the impact of structured settlements developed?

Since I’m new to the industry, I’ve gained an awareness I wouldn’t otherwise have. Through the journey here, I’ve learnt a lot about the ‘what’ and ‘why’, but now that I’m here and behind the scenes, I get to see the ‘how’. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with such talented teammates who care a lot about what we do, how we do it, who’s impacted and what can we do to keep making things even better. Can’t say enough positive remarks about the brilliant team of folks I am blessed to call coworkers.

A “small win” in my day that actually feels massive…

When I affirm in some way that I am learning and ‘connecting the dots’ in my new role. Outside of being the NKOTB and piecing all the technical information together, I love it so much when I know I have made someone’s day just a little bit easier, brought a smile to their face, or uplifted them in some way.

The challenges I love solving…

That generally take me to what I perceive to be uncharted territory, because I learn something new, whether technical or about myself. I enjoy digging into root causes and finding ways to make enhancements that positively impact stakeholder(s).

One thing people wouldn’t guess about me…

I have done jiu-jitsu for a time and have a few moves I recall.

A habit or mindset that has totally changed the way I operate…

Knowing (and reminding myself) that I can do the best I can with what I have – and to let the rest go. It is a lot easier than it sounds.

Book, podcast, or documentary that’s been influential…

Mel Robbins: The ‘Let Them Theory’

What do you want people to remember after meeting you?

I want people to remember that they always have permission to be their full, authentic self in my presence; that I will accept them as they are. And when leaving my presence, my greatest hope is that people feel heard, seen, appreciated, loved, energized, and cared for. I enjoy magnifying the good in others!

You can connect with me for…

Anytime someone needs help with a policy once it has been issued. I love helping, too, so if I can’t directly assist, I will find someone who can!
